CeDAR Connects Alumni Newsletter

June 16th, 2022 | Volume 13

Around this time of year, early June, when the summer heat sets in and the evenings linger, I get a bit of a summer itch. Yes, even after a decade of recovery. This itch used to be really bothersome to me, both because I had it and I couldn't scratch it. I've since learned how to navigate the seasonal cravings through many tools, one of which being re-association. For example, one may associate Capitol Hill with their old using stomping grounds. Re-association would be that they now associate Capitol Hill with meetings and fellowship at York St. and sober recreation at Cheesman Park.

The truth is, I still do much of what I used to do during the summer months: baseball games, concerts, patio outings and Pridefest activities. I've just put a lot of effort into re-associating those activities with recovery and not with using. I do this by surrounding myself with people who support me and hold me accountable - others who also value and protect their recovery. The next couple of weekends, for example, will be spent doing fun things with fun sober people. This weekend, we will have a solid alumni crew for Recovery Appreciation night at The Rockies game hosted by SoberAF. Next weekend, we will be checking out the new sober space at PrideFest. So, if you are questioning how you can make the most of out a sober summer, I would encourage you to get involved with the Alumni Community to re-associate fun. We are not a glum lot!
Who wants to grab coffee?! I am available to meet virtually or in-person local to CeDAR. This is a great opportunity to talk about anything you may need recovery support with. Schedule a Coffee Talk and I'll bring you some CeDAR swag, too!

A Man's Search for Meaning Book Club:

A profoundly harrowing story about a man, Viktor Frankl, seeking meaning through one of the most horrific human experiences: The Holocaust. I have heard many talk about how this title, in particular, has impacted their recovery - as week seek our own meaning through the adversity of addiction. In fact, for one of our alumni, this book was so impactful they donate several copies of this very book to CeDAR residents every year.

One of the first projects our newly formed Alumni Activities Committee is starting a virtual book club with A Man's Search for Meaning as the book.

The book club is open to others in recovery outside of CeDAR. It will be virtually held bi-weekly on Wednesdays beginning July 13th from 6:30pm-7:30pm and will be led by a few of our alumni. If you'd like to join, please RSVP here and I will send you more info.
