CeDAR Connects Alumni Newsletter

May 18th, 2023 | Volume 22

In figuring out what to write for this volume, I decided to take inspiration from a topic introduced by an alumna in a recent meeting. She shared "The Man in the Arena" speech by Teddy Roosevelt which proclaims we need not worry about succeeding nor failing, only that we show up by stepping into the arena. This reminds me of the AA slogan, "suit up and show up". Too often we can become consumed with the stories we tell ourselves about what it will be like once in the arena, that we never actually step inside of it.
Head Shot
Recovery cannot be watched from the stands. It cannot be theorized or imagined, for time is too precious. Recovery requires us to get uncomfortable—to be marred by dust and sweat and blood—and become an active participant in our own healing. Recovery is a step into the great unknown, yes, but how victorious it is to step into the unknown arena rather than to only wonder what it could have been like.
Who wants to grab coffee?! I am available to meet virtually or in-person local to CeDAR. This is a great opportunity to talk about anything you may need recovery support with. Schedule a Coffee Talk and I'll bring you some CeDAR swag, too!

Digging For Recovery:

Do you think we'll avoid a late May snow this year?! Fingers crossed. We are looking to build a digging team for the 2023 growing season. If you're interested, join us this Sunday, May 21st, at 10:30am for our first CeDAR Digs Day of the season. We will be prepping the beds, planting and cleaning up the perimeter. No experience necessary; we'll take as many hands as we can get. Gardening supplies and snacks provided. Be sure to wear sunscreen! Parking is in Garage 8, across from CeDAR. RSVP here.

A New Thread:

So many of our residents are utilizing the clothing & toiletry pantry to find items which help make their stay with us a little more comfortable. I'm sure many of you have been spring cleaning asking yourself, "does this bring me joy?" I would encourage you to consider donating some of your items to the pantry to make sure we are fully stocked and able to meet the needs of our residents. In high demand: backpacks, duffle bags, activewear, athletic shoes and new toiletries. Check out the link below for specifics. Please be selective with what you donate; you wouldn't believe some of the items we've received! Service positions are also available for the pantry.

Your Online Hub:

The best resource for alumni and the entire CeDAR community is CeDAR Central. Here, you can find current meetings, activities, service opportunities, recovery resources & more. Please let us know your feedback!

New Feature!

We want to start featuring Alumni stories in the CeDAR Connects newsletter. We are looking for volunteers who would be willing to submit a short writing along with a picture. Reach out for details!

Programming Update:

  • The Sunset Alumni meeting is back starting Tuesday, May 30th, at Great Lawn Park in Lowry from 6:30-7:30pm. We meet at the steps on the east side of the park. Bring a chair and wear sunscreen. This will replace the Real Talk Mondays Alumni meeting. On the last Tuesday of the month, we will go to Rocket Ice cream for post-meeting fellowship.
  • After 3 long years, we have finally gotten word CeDAR residents can begin attending in-person community recovery meetings! As you can imagine, COVID changed the landscape of meetings at CeDAR so there is still work to be done in terms of blending virtual and in-person and determining logistics. Stay tuned; we're SO close. I can't wait to have alum and residents in the lecture hall TOGETHER. That, for me and I know many of you, is when CeDAR will be back!

Sober not Somber:

In this feature we highlight upcoming activities within the recovery community. If you have any recovery-related events to put on the calendar, let us know.

Supply Drive!

We are running a supply drive for Pawsitive Recovery, a local non-profit who finds foster homes for pet whos humans need to go into treatment. Send supplies directly to CeDAR or drop-off to the pictured bin in the vestibule. The drive will continue through June. Click here for list of needed supplies.
